Six recipients have been recognised at this year’s DSD II Certificate Presentation, a premier event held by the Goethe Society WA.

DSD II stands for Deutsches Sprachdiplom 2 (German Language Diploma 2) and is an annual exam assessing reading, listening, writing and speaking skills at a high level.

The achievement of reaching the DSD II standard is a very significant accomplishment, and the presentation of certificates is the culmination of two years of intensive study, a five-hour written exam and a 20-minute oral presentation in front of a board of examiners.

The level of German language that is achieved means that students are skilled enough to study at a university in Germany or any German-speaking country.

Citizenship and Multicultural Interests Minister, Dr Tony Buti said the certificate presentation showed the fundamental importance of language learning in our globally connected world, and also closer to home in the multicultural State of Western Australia.

“Language learning is important for individuals, for families, for communities and for the State of Western Australia.

“As the national language of six countries, and an important language spoken by large numbers in many other countries, knowledge of German can only be an advantage for students in their education, career and general cultural understanding.”

This year’s DSD II graduates are:

  • Alexander Gregory Warland, Churchlands Senior High School
  • Arthur Caspelherr, Perth Modern School
  • Ben Remke, Christchurch Grammar School
  • Dominic Max Bertschinger, Shenton College
  • Kyle Reid, Curtin University
  • Sontje Anna Mangan, Seton Catholic College.

The Goethe Society WA is only one of two schools in Australia allowed to offer DSD II.
