The Office of Multicultural Interests’ community engagement team is often a first point of call for community groups or individuals wanting to discuss issues affecting their communities.
OMI liaises between culturally and linguistically diverse (CaLD) communities and the service providers whose role is to address community issues and needs.
Engaging with our diverse communities and listening to their needs results in better understanding of community difficulties and requirements. OMI then uses this information to advocate the needs of CaLD communities to State Government agencies.
Liaison with CaLD community groups and organisations builds rapport and trust between OMI and CaLD communities, essential for working cooperatively and for capacity building. It also extends local knowledge of available programs and services that can assist with addressing issues within the community.
Community liaison often assists with matters related to the successful settlement of new arrivals to Western Australia as well as issues concerning long-established communities.
As part of its Strategic Plan 2014–2018, OMI works to strengthen the capacity of culturally diverse communities.
